Africa 2013 - Back from Rwanda
We're back in Nairobi, Kenya after some absolutely fantastic trekking in the Virunga mountains. Everyone, yours truly included, made it through the visits to the mountain gorillas without incident or mishap. Day 1 in Rwanda included a trek to see the golden monkeys in bamboo forest - relatively flat and easy hiking for acclimatization. Days two and three were treks into the alpine rain forest above the bamboo zone. Day 3's hike included a gain of one thousand vertical feet (and back down again) to to over 9000 ft. up the side of Mt. Sabinyo. The troup of gorillas we were following lead us a merry chase uphill until they stopped for their morning rest. They went to the market... as our guide called it. We visited a local "cooperative" where women worked 2 days a week making baskets. Visiting with the women as they sat in the grass weaving and sewing baskets was quite a treat. There's a lot more from our jam-packed schedule, but time is short tonight, and it's been a very busy week so far. Stay tuned... GPS tracks and photos are still being processed. Here's a quick sample.

Day 1 - A stop at the Coop
Day 2 - Kwitonda group - WakaWaka (baby) and Mbilimbili (mother in background)
Day 3 - Hirwa group - Kabatwa resting while keeping an eye on us
Amazing Frank! Can't wait to see them all!
